(HARRISBURG) – Senator David J. Arnold (R-48) secured a grant of $500,000 for the large-scale, master-planned community, Freedom Square, in York County.
Freedom Square will create more than 1,000 new jobs, workforce housing, and recreational opportunities for the residents of Conewago Township and the larger York County region. This 450-acre project will provide a town-center experience for people to live, work, and play.
The proposed development will offer a variety of residential units including apartments, single family homes, townhomes, senior and assisted living, and nursing care, as well as retail and service amenities, office space, and other commercial uses. Additionally, the development will feature walking paths connecting the community to an existing trail network, as well as public parks, community open spaces, and various recreational playing fields. The scope of work includes a floodplain restoration project and applicable stormwater management measures in order to accommodate the development.
To advance the project, transportation infrastructure improvements must first occur. Integration with the existing transportation network, including both on- and off-site municipal and state roadways, will require improvements to existing roads, as well as construction of new roads, and potential signalization. Specifically, the proposed MTF Project consists of the construction of a four-legged roundabout on Canal Road to improve traffic flow and facilitate site access.
“I’m extremely excited to see this project come to fruition.” said Senator David J. Arnold. “This community provides housing and commercial activity, while providing the local economy with an increased tax-base for improving education in our local public schools. It’s a great project, and I’m looking forward to what comes next.”
